It was also discovered that veterans with medical or trauma-related illnesses as well as unmet social requirements. Such as housing insecurity are more likely to be food insecure. Food insecurity, defined as the restricted or unclear supply of nutritionally appropriate food, is predicted to affect up to 24 percent of U.S. military veterans, with the risks being much higher for persons of color and women, according to a recent study.

At-Risk Veterans Include Those of Color Women and Those with Health Issues

Though it is said that diseases don’t see colors and races, but in a recent study, some experts have failed this year’s old belief. In a study, it is observed that there are a few diseases that consider color and race also as they are gene-based and hence trigger poor health conditions compared to the people who are from different genres. Such diseases can also be seen differentiating between men and women at different ages and from different areas, which is seen in different samples by the experts.

Researchers reviewed data to discover the characteristics of veterans who are more at risk of food insecurity for the study. A targeted approach to alleviating food insecurity’s long-term health and well-being implications can be devised if researchers know which populations to focus on.

“There’s not a one-size-fits-all solution for addressing veteran food insecurity,” said corresponding author Dr. Alicia Cohen a Brown assistant professor (research) of family medicine and health services policy and practice. “So, findings from studies like this can be used in many ways from helping to identify the most at-risk groups to helping address veterans’ immediate food need to connecting veterans with programs and resources that can hopefully help improve their food security over the long term.”

Many veterans have economic and job obstacles after military duty, according to Cohen, which arises from both service-related mental & physical health issues as well as difficulty reintegrating into civilian life – characteristics that can raise the likelihood of food poverty.

That’s why in 2017, the Veterans Health Administration created a systematic screening system in which staff is encouraged to inquire veterans seeking health treatment about food hardship. This is the first study to look into the results of those screening questions. The researchers looked at the data from the screens to see whether demographic and medical factors were linked to a positive food insecurity test.

According to Cohen, the findings of the study can be used to build targeted comprehensive interventions to combat food insecurity among veterans. For example, if a clinician is treating a diabetic veteran who is experiencing food insecurity, they can look over the veteran’s medical history to determine if there are any drugs that the veteran may be unable to buy or that put the veteran in danger of low blood sugar.

Prior sexual trauma in the military was linked to an increased likelihood of food insecurity in both men and women. Women were eight times more likely than men to have experienced military sexual trauma when they tested positive for food insecurity. This case exemplifies how sexual trauma suffered while serving in the military can have a wide range of negative consequences for veterans, according to Cohen. “And as these results show, women bear a much higher burden.”

“For example, they may help us identify specific groups that would benefit from more targeted or more frequent screening for food insecurity as well as expanding where we conduct routine food insecurity screening to include settings like mental health clinics “, Cohen added.

The approved manuscript is published online ahead of the final edition of the study, which will be published in a print issue of Public Health Nutrition.
