A pattern of misbehavior that requires professional intervention needs to be distinguished from occasional errors of judgment. Infractions must be assessed by severity and frequency.

As well as decreasing disparities in outcomes for youth of color, Wraparound may decrease outcomes disparities for the youth of color.
Researchers led by Jonathan Olson, USA, used a meta-analysis of more than 16 controlled studies published between 1995 and 2019 to test the effectiveness of Wraparound versus regular services for youth with substance use disorders.
The study’s lead author, Dr. Eric Bruns, a psychiatrist who has long used Wraparound in public systems, says it perfectly serves the purpose of providing families with compassionate treatment — something that families claim they desire. Today, Wraparound is proving to be a more cost-effective and better method of care than the traditional approach, as many in their own system have already seen.
Wraparound was found to have significant positive effects on a number of youth outcomes–including decreasing out-of-home placements, improving mental health functioning, and improving academic performance. Youth enrolled in Wraparound care had significantly lower care costs because there were fewer out-of-home placements. Minority samples were more likely to benefit from Wraparound programs in 16 studies or more.
We want to uphold principles like youth- and family-driven programs, strengths-based approaches, and a team of people to meet the needs of youth and families, so Wraparound lives up to these values,” added Dr. Bruns. Some states are hesitant to use Wraparound because it doesn’t seem based on evidence, but this study is intended to resolve those concerns.”
Originally developed in the 1980s, Wraparound encouraged community-based care instead of costly institutional care, preventing fragmented services for youth and families. Instead, Wraparound employs a care coordinator who congregates a team comprised of family members, friends, and community members, as well as service providers and other service providers.
In addition to demonstrating the importance of implementing high-quality Wraparound services that adhere to the model, Olson emphasizes that this study reinforces the importance of measuring Wraparound fidelity. Those that measured Wraparound fidelity found that youth and their families flourished when they received top-notch treatment.
Dr. Bruns states that Wraparound was better able to meet the needs of the youth of color in all of these studies. Compared with traditional programs such as mental health, child welfare, and juvenile justice.
Researchers have shown disparities in access and outcomes for youth of color and their families for decades. Wraparound may reduce disparities if more youth and families are allowed to voice their needs and choices. Moreover, family members, friends, and community members can be involved in the process. But that was not the focus of the studies, and we need to conduct stronger research into what may address disparities.”
