Top Gun: Maverick was the biggest movie release of that year, not counting superhero franchise projects. And of course, it reached extraordinary minds like Quentin Tarantino, who had nothing but good things to say about the film, its director, the cinematography, and Tom Cruise himself. During a recent meeting with the ReelBlend podcast, Tarantino talks about the film that has been exciting him for a long time.

Quentin Tarantino was a longtime admirer of Hollywood director Tony Scott. The couple had the chance to work together when the latter realized true romance in 1993, whose screenplay was written by the former. However, a decade before maverick was to become a reality, Scott died in 2012, tragically ending an era of cinematic genius.

With the visionary sequel now a reality, Tarantino couldn’t contain his excitement at its unprecedented brilliance. He claimed,
“I love Top Gun: Maverick. I thought it was fantastic. I saw it in the cinema. That and [Steven] Spielberg’s West Side Story both offered true cinematic spectacle, the kind I almost thought I wasn’t going to see anymore. It was fantastic.”

Top Gun: Maverick: A recreation of Tony Scott’s vision
Tarantino vehemently enjoyed Joseph Kosinski’s directorial debut, Top Gun: Maverick saying it was as close as it gets to a real Tony Scott movie. As for Kosinski, it was a touch scenario when the director approached his protagonist for the sequel role. At the end of the film, Kosinski shared a heartwarming story in which he told how he was initially turned down by Tom Cruise for a Superior gun sequel set 30 years later.

However, a 30-minute pitch from the director gave Cruise the impetus to land his Palme d’Or winning role. Kosinski’s vision for the film was incredibly revering for Tony Scott. And that was evident in its cinematography which it played down to the roots to match a film directed by Scott while still staying true to the narrative that the original Superior gun overwhelmed the audience.

About the director of Top Gun: MaverickQuentin Tarantino had as much to say as the classic sequel itself.
“[Director Joseph Kosinski] does a great job. The respect and love for Tony was in every picture. It was almost in every decision. It was consciously just there, but in this really cool way that was really respectful. And I think it was in every decision Tom [Cruise] done in the movie.
