Native Americans had dogs, didn’t they? Before Predator Prey’s canine pal in Carolina had raving admirers
The Predator prequel movie, Prey, was made available on Hulu on Friday, August 5. The film contrasts the Yautja and the hunters of the Comanche tribes in the Northern Great Plains of 1719. Amber Midthunder’s Naru was the main character in the novel, but Sarii, her dog, was a great help to Naru.
The hunting party’s canine companion was an essential tool at their disposal, and during the film he even engaged in numerous attacks on the Predator. Sarii aids Native American hunters in their search for a missing child and eventually leads them to the Yautja.
In the film, the devoted friend supports Naru in all her hunting endeavors and later helps her locate the enigmatic hunter, i.e. the Predator.

Sarii’s canine character, while becoming one of the most lovable aspects of the Prey movie, also provided an intriguing historical connection between Native Americans and their use of native canines for hunting.
According to a 2009 LiveScience article by Meredith F. Small on human migration to the Americas, Asians who crossed the Bering Strait were the first to introduce dogs to the continent. Meanwhile, Ruth Callahan, a researcher at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, provided additional theoretical details in a study titled Domestication of Dogs and Their Use on the Great Plains.
According to the aforementioned research, the tribes employed the dogs to guard camps, hunt, shoot, or transport goods as well as, curiously, to drive the youths when the tribes moved to other campsites. It is said that dogs are descended from wolves. For the protection of children during migration, Ruth suggested tethering them to reliable dogs.
The alliance between man and dog, which was formed more than 14,000 years ago, has proven effective.

Similar studies have mostly suggested over the years that the first specimens of the American dingo (also known as the Carolina dog) came from the canine species brought by Asian immigrants.

Many tweets expressing support for the American Goofy appeared after Coco the dog portrayed Sarii in Prey. Coco’s age at the time of filming is uncertain, but he would have made his acting debut in the film Prey (2022).
