The second episode of The Sandman Season 1 serves as a transition between the preface and the start of Morpheus’ journey as the first episode of The Sandman Season 1 introduces the tale for the rest of the season. Imperfect Hosts, the second episode, based on The Sandman #2, introduced new characters and established their storylines for the season.
Dream eventually returned to the Dreaming, where he encountered Lucienne (Vivienne Acheampong), who was waiting for him. He had no power to repair his domain, which was in ruins, for fear of discovering his tools.
Other characters that were introduced in this episode included the fictional portrayals of biblical brothers Cain (Sanjeev Bhaskar) and Abel (Asim Chaudhary), the over-hundred-year-old Ethel Cripps (Joely Richardson), and her institutionalized son John ( David Thewlis), as well as the Fates (Nina Wadia, Souad Faress, and Dinita Gohil), or the

Morpheus needed to call the Fates to help him locate his tools as he was helpless without them. The three goddesses, however, never provided a straight answer, as Lucienne had warned, and calling them turned out to be a costly undertaking.
Morpheus realized he could recover some of his abilities by using a creation he made in a dream. The epiphany led him to the dreamlike interpretation of Cain and Abel, the dysfunctional siblings to whom Morpheus had given a pet gargoyle named Gregory, the first killer and first victim. Their relationship offered light comic relief from the drama of the play.
By turning Gregory into sand, Morpheus regained some of his power and gathered the gifts needed to summon the Fates. The three women answered his questions regarding his three tools, but the ambiguous answers further extended Dream’s journey. However, when they informed him that Johanna Constantine was with her sandbag, he knew where to start.
The second episode of Sandman included a different story that was initially unrelated to Morpheus. Ethel Cripps, who was Roderick Burgess’ lover in the first episode, was now over a century old and a well-known art dealer in New York.
She had hidden the fact that she had exchanged Dream’s weapons for the protection amulet, which had kept her alive. Even when Corinthian tried to force her to reveal the location of the ruby her son John had stolen, she used it to push him back and send him back to the Dream.
After that, viewers were sent to a mental health facility where Ethel had admitted her son after stealing the ruby from him. The son of Ethel and Roderick Burgess is played by the legendary David Thewlis.

When it comes to production costs, the Netflix adaptation made no compromises. Each episode captures viewers’ attention with its amazing presentation, from the building to the graphics. Unlike the previous episode, where Tom Sturridge had virtually no dialogue, this one gave viewers their first chance to hear Morpheus speak, with a raspy, melancholy voice that’s ideal for his dark role.
The 37-minute episode, which was the shortest of The Sandman Season 1, established the turning points in Morpheus’ journey. The plot was a bit hazy, with many plot points feeling unclear, especially to those unfamiliar with the comics, and it lacked the magnetism of the first episode.
There won’t be instant gratification when it comes to explanations of the series’ various enigmatic aspects, however, as evidenced by the adaptation. If the show continues, some issues may not be resolved until the second or third season.
On August 5, 2022, The Sandman Season 1 debuted on Netflix. All episodes are currently streamable.
