Kevin Smith Criticizes Warner Bros. Discovery For Cancelling ‘Batgirl’

Kevin Smith is candid with his criticism of Warner Bros. Discovery for canceling the bat girl film.

Whatever your position on Warner Bros. Discovery and their decision to cancel the bat girl film, there is no doubt that this move is unprecedented from a major studio, especially in the heroic era of Hollywood. Since the film, which was to star Leslie Grace as Barbara Gordon, was already filmed and currently in post-production, the choice to cancel the film for a tax deduction rubbed many the wrong way. One person who was really disappointed with the move was Kevin Smith.

On his podcast Hollywood chatterKevin Smith reacted to the decision to cancel bat girl, and he is quite direct in his criticisms. Here he claims that the optics are really bad on all fronts and quite difficult given the circumstances:

“It’s an incredibly bad look to cancel the Latina bat girl film. I don’t give a fuck if the movie was absolute shit. I guarantee you not. The two directors who made this film did a few episodes of Ms. Marveland it was a wonderful fucking show and they had more money to make bat girl that they only had to do an episode of Ms. Marvel and other things.”

The decision to cancel bat girl was the Warner Bros. CEO’s own repudiation. Discovery’s David Zaslav on former CEO Jason Kilar’s approach to DCEU theatrical releases and HBO Max streaming exclusives. The DCEU film fell victim to Regime Change, and reports that the film was “irretrievably bad” seem greatly exaggerated given that the film was tested in the same way as the first cut of black adam, who provided reshoots and post-production resources to polish the film. Also, Kevin Smith’s comments here make total sense given that canceling a Latina-led superhero movie while having no official comment yet regarding the flash star Ezra Miller and their legal troubles are just bad optics.

bat girl was to feature Leslie Grace as Barbara Gordon, along with JK Simmons as Commissioner Gordon, Brendan Fraser as Firefly, and Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne/Batman. Keaton is still set to reprise his role as his version of the Caped Crusader in the upcoming DCEU movie, The flash.
