Early life
Odenkirk was raised in Naperville after being born in Berwyn, Illinois. He is one of seven children born to Barbara Mary (née Baier) Odenkirk and Walter Henry Odenkirk, both Catholics of German and Irish ancestry. Walter Henry Odenkirk worked in the printing industry. Due to Walter’s drinking, which contributed to his parents’ divorce, Bob decided to abstain from alcohol as much as he could. He calls his father “screwed up, distant and not there”. [8] Odenkirk later claimed growing up “When I was 15, I hated Naperville because it” felt like a dead end, like Nowheresville. I looked forward to going to a city and being around individuals who were engaging in intriguing activities. In 1986, bone cancer claimed the life of Walter Odenkirk. Bill Odenkirk, a comic writer, is Odenkirk’s younger brother. Early in Bill’s career, Bob had supported him.
Odenkirk attended Naperville North High School and graduated at age 16; he claimed to be “tired of high school” and was allowed to leave while still a junior because he had earned enough credits.
He made the decision to enroll at nearby DuPage College in Glen Ellyn, Illinois because he was so young and thought he would feel out of place at any college.
After a year,[10] he moved to Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois, where he “honed his sketch-writing and performance skills with live programs on radio stations at both institutions.”
He got his start in comedy writing as a radio DJ for WIDB, the SIU campus station that was not transmitted locally. He created The Prime Time Special, a late-night radio comedy show at WIDB that ran from midnight to four in the morning. Odenkirk made the decision to pursue songwriting and improv in Chicago when he was three credits away from graduating from college after three years. He completed his studies at Columbia College Chicago and graduated from SIU in 1984 with a bachelor’s degree. Odenkirk first studied with Del Close and then went to Players Workshop where he met Robert Smigel. Their partnership lasted for years and led to Odenkirk appearing on Saturday Night Live. [5] He also appeared at Improv Olympic with famous comics Tim Meadows and Chris Farley.
