Early life
Coming from a middle-class family background, David Turin’s childhood in Mt Hood was spent in the outdoors, taking an interest in pursuits such as fishing and hunting. There is no information about his early education, although it is known that he was a high school football player.
As a teenager, he and his three brothers Dan, Dennis and Douglas began to pave their family land with the guidance of their father Jim.
As their neighbors praised the exceptional work of the four young boys, the family began by landing small paving contracts in Oregon. Having earned a reputation for hard work, they officially formed Jim Turin and Sons, Inc. in 1973.
Dave left the family business to go to college, earning a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Portland State University.
Career
family affair
After graduating, Dave returned to work in his family’s paving business, as the economy of the late 80s was in crisis and it was difficult for him to find other jobs in his field. His decision to continue his family business, however, was good for his career, as their business grew to include a successful asphalt plant named Mt. Hood Asphalt.
Dave’s natural leadership came true when he took over Mt. Hood Rock, a rock quarry that also belonged to his family after it was acquired in 1988 shortly after Dave graduated. Therefore, in his position as a career manager, he gained mining experience and later became an expert in safety and work equipment, working in the field for more than 25 years.
“Gold Rush” – Television Debut
He first appeared in “Gold Rush” in the show’s first season, when he was brought in by Todd Hoffman as a guest consultant to solve crew problems while working at the mine. Jim Nail Placer, Alaska. At the time, he only appeared briefly on the show, as his main job was still in the family business.
Convinced to pursue his dream of chasing gold and following a promise made to his father, Dave Turin joined Hoffman’s team at Quartz Creek Claim in the show’s second season. His equipment expertise served his team well, leading him to become one of the main stars and Hoffman’s right-hand man until 2017, when he left the show. His retirement was caused by issues following a fight with Trey Poulson in the seventh season finale.
Turin made his departure from the show official in a post on his Facebook page, in which he thanked fans for their support, saying it was time for him to “move on”.
In the comments section, fans were quick to ask the reason for his retirement to which Dave replied that “no amount of money or gold is worth working with a disrespectful crew member”.
It’s time for me to move on and put this behind me.
Discovery Channel Director Scott Lewers praised Turin’s role in the show: “Dave Turin established himself as a fan favorite as viewers witnessed his successes, failures and perseverance” . Turin was also highly regarded by his fellow miners, as he frequently showed a deep interest in their welfare: “We have guys with young children. We have guys with kids in college. This gold is enough gold to have a significant impact on their lives.
“Gold Rush” ran its first season in 2011, and has been a reality TV hit ever since. The show aired on Discovery Channel and its affiliates worldwide and was filmed in various locations such as Canada, Guyana, Chile and Peru.
“The Lost Mine of Dave Turin” – 2019
In 2019, it was announced that a “Gold Rush” after-show titled “Dave Turin’s Lost Mine” would debut in April. The spin-off series centers on Dave on his search for gold in Lynx Creek, Arizona. The reality show also marked the first Discovery series to air simultaneously on different platforms, such as the network’s Discovery GO app and the official website. During the show, Dave formed his own mining team, stating that despite its members’ inexperience, it is made up of people he respects.
At the beginning of the series, Dave was financed by third-party sources, however, as the mining works progressed successfully, Dave financed the mining explorations himself.
Centered on Turin’s search for gold in thousands of abandoned mines in Montana, a second season of the show aired in February 2020, lasting eight episodes.
