During the recent upheaval at Warner Bros. Discovery, with David Zaslav scrapping projects left, right and center, fans feared Matt Reeves’ planned Batman trilogy was next on the chopping block.
Thankfully, it appears those concerns were unfounded and unwarranted, with news breaking Reeves began working on batman 2, enlisting Mattson Tomlin for help. Tomlin jumped on board The Batman when rewrites occurred during the third act, though he did not get writing credit for his efforts. This time, he is present from the start.

The Batman: Revisited
While the Marvel Cinematic Universe has gone from strength to strength, the past nine years since Steel man launched the DCEU hasn’t been kind to DC fans. With more bad entries than good ones, fans were clamoring for DC to release something true to the source material and a good movie about it. Enter Matt Reeves.

Reeve’s was brought back into the DC fold when Ben Affleck’s Batman was supposed to get his own solo movie, written and directed by the titular star. After the bad reception of batman versus superman and Justice League, this idea was abandoned quite quickly. While Reeves admitted to reading and enjoying the script Affleck wrote, he decided to go his own way.
Taking the character as a standalone, rather than directly connected to the larger DCEU, seems to have been a masterstroke. Not weighed down by the connective tissue of the universe, Reeves was able to create a more beleaguered, tortured, and less well-adjusted version of Bruce Wayne/Batman.
Having a grounded version of the character has worked wonders, and while it’s not without its flaws, The Batman, is arguably the most interesting and faithful take on the character since we first saw Bale’s take on the man under the hood. Even more so when the film features Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne throwing himself completely into his alter ego, dealing with his pain and grief with his attempt to “save Gotham.”
Batman 2 in the works, we don’t want to wait five years
Originally thought of as a complete conclusion after The Batman ran to a worldwide box office of over $700 million, recent turmoil at Warner Bros. Discovery threw that certainty out the window. However, it looks like we now have script confirmation for batman 2 is being worked on and the film has been greenlit for production upon completion.
Embarking on Tomlin from scratch also seems like a good move, as he’s no stranger to comic book adaptations after his help on the first film. He’s currently working on the adaptation of Keanu Reeves’ graphic novel BRZRKR, as well as making his comic book debut last year with his miniseries. Batman: The Imposter.
There’s naturally no news on plot points, but there have been plenty of fan theories and rumors so far. After the teaser at the end of the first film, featuring Barry Keoghan’s Joker talking to Paul Dano’s Riddler, fans are expecting the core Batman villain to appear more prominently in the second film.
Anyway, whether it’s the Joker, Bane, or another Batman thug we’ve seen less of on the big screen (give me Firefly and Mr. Freeze), the wait for batman 2 is high.
