The original film was based on a 1983 magazine article written by Ehud Yonay titled The best guns and Paramount had secured the magazine rights the same year for the film Superior gun. But the copyright was terminated after 35 years in 2018, while Top Gun: Maverick was released in 2022.

Considering the action a violation of copyright law, the Yonays sued Paramount to recover the rights as the film was completed in May 2022. Additionally, they also argued that the company ignored copyright law. copyright by presenting the film without crediting Ehud Yonay.

The studio intends to have the lawsuit dismissed instantly, but is prepared if the lawsuit goes further as the plaintiffs, the Yonays, will have to prove that the film was substantially similar to The best guns rather than Superior gun.
