I have faster feet and a better mentality thanks to football. (…) The one and only disadvantage of coming from a football background is that you don’t do deadlifts in football. We clean and tear. I had a lot of trouble with the deadlift early on, like most football players, especially those who have played as long as I have.
Debut as a Strongman
Robert started working as a security guard at a bar, meeting amateur strongman and fellow Evan. His friend’s enthusiasm for strongman competitions led Robert to begin training there, unofficially breaking the record set for the amateur Log Press of 330 lb (150 kg) the first time he did it. tried, lifting an impressive 350 lbs (159 kg).
Oberst remembers the event with humour: “The first time I touched a log, I broke the amateur record. I then asked him (Evan), ‘Is that good?’ He told me to “fuck it”, but I was hooked after that day.
Robert trained continuously for four months after that, earning a Pro-Card at his first show in 2013, qualifying for national and major events.

Such a feat was significant for Robert in a personal way, and considers it his proudest moment: “I was in Australia, watching the Terminator himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger, breaking Max Log’s record. It’s mainly because the former record holder, Mike Jenkins, was someone I looked up to and respected a lot. Jenkins had passed away, so when they presented me with the award, I rolled my eyes in memory of a great competitor. They captured that moment on camera with a photo, and it’s my favorite. Now, after holding that record for three years, I want to keep it for Mike too.
However, this record was taken from Oberst by Rob Kearney, who surpassed it in April 2019 with 471lbs (214kgs): “I had it for several years, and not being able to defend it was very frustrating.” he confessed, although he promised to work to break the world record.

Coaching

My “thing” is that I work my shoulders like crazy. I make sure I do everything in the gym the right way. I don’t bounce the bar off my chest when I’m on the bench. I don’t call anything a lockout unless I lock it out, and I don’t practice hit number recognition in the gym. I want numbers in the shows.
He also recommended the most beneficial workout routines when training pressing: “I think the military press is way more beneficial than the incline, and the bench press is also very underrated in this sport. Also, the triceps can’t be overworked in my opinion. My upper body day at the gym never lasted less than four hours and I always come home wishing I had hit a few more muscles.
Over the years, his openness about his physical condition has not changed.
