In June 2010, when Nicholas was 20 months old and Katerina was 6 months old, Peter claimed his two young children were the greatest thing that had ever happened to him. Additionally, he stated that his younger brother is hyperactive and his young child is relatively quiet.

In the town of Kalokerines on the Greek island of Kythera, Peter V’landys was born in 1962 to parents Katerina Petrochilos and Nick. His mother is from Fratsia and is the child of Kirrani and Alex Petrochilos.

Nick, Peter’s father, traveled alone to Australia in 1963. He had joined a sibling in Wollongong and another in Gosford during his stay in Australia. Peter’s mother, Katerina, and two older brothers, Paul and Alex, came to Australia on the Patris in 1965.

Together he has three siblings. But unlike other famous kids, he didn’t have a good upbringing. On occasion, her parents had to go without food to feed the three children. His father worked 18-hour shifts at the Wollongong steelworks. Considering his lack of language skills, it was the best he could do.

Every day, his father started work at age six and usually finished at age four, although he sometimes devoted more time to it. It finishes its task at midnight and starts again at six o’clock. He retired from his job at 60 and tragically passed away at 64. His mother then worked a 12-hour shift at a cafe.

When his friend introduced Peter to other Wollongong neighbors who later watched “Harold Park” harness racing on TV, Peter developed a taste for racing.

In June, V’landys spent 90 minutes at Windsor Castle before a race at Royal Ascot. In the coming days, the NRL and the races will pay tribute to the Queen.

The winner was stroked by the Queen, who reported to Peter that the horse was like silk. After that day, she had a pure love for racehorses. While her grandfather, King George V, and her mother were always avid horse racing fans, her father was not a huge fan.

Career

Equine influenza outbreak

A case of equine flu forced the racing business to close in mid-2007. The hardest hit state was New South Wales, when all horse racing was suspended and no horses was allowed to move.

The industry response to this disaster was coordinated overall by V’landys, who also created and implemented contingency plans to deal with the impacts of the outbreak, including negotiating a bailout of $235 million.

He also pressed NSW governments to release additional funds, which led to the creation of a $7.5 million grant scheme, a one-time mortgage deferral scheme and another one-time grant to support industry promotion after regular racing returns.

After the Government announced that World Youth Day 2008 would take place in Sydney, with Randwick Racetrack as the focal point, V’landys organized industry planning for the use of the racetrack and the disruptions that would caused by the event. For the racing industry, that meant negotiating $40 million in compensation.

Racetrack Legislation

In 2008, V’landys was responsible for requiring corporate bookmakers and other gambling businesses to compensate races for the use of their proceeds. Before that, bookmakers set their own prices and made relatively few payouts. The Race Field legislation was discovered by V’landys after first considering the application of copyright. Racing NSW has been challenged by bookmakers all the way to the high court. The High Court rendered a unanimous decision in favor of Racing NSW. This victory meant that the races would bring in over $1 billion over the next ten years. Additionally, it implied that the sport could charge bookmakers for the use of its products, generating millions of dollars for the industry.
