King, born in Longview, Texas, was the fifth dual-threat quarterback in the 2020 recruiting class.
King attended Longview High School. In his first career start, which came in September of last year against the Golden Flashes, King completed 21 of 33 passes for 292 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions.
King, a third-year sophomore, defeated LSU transfer Max Johnson and five-star prospect Conner Weigman in a duel for the job this offseason. King won the challenge.
King successfully won the competition to be the starting quarterback for Game 1 after the conclusion of training camp for the second straight year.
A lower leg laceration he suffered in the first quarter of the Aggies’ game against Colorado in Week 2 of the previous season forced him to miss the remainder of the season. Prior to that, he led the Aggies to a win over Kent State.
He’s not the starting quarterback for Texas A&M. King’s running skills can significantly affect A&M’s attack. He completed the 40-yard sprint in under 4.5 seconds during the offseason.
A&M head trainer Jimbo Fisher said in July that King could hit 22 miles per hour on A&M’s GPS tracker during training while maintaining a steady speed in the 21 mph zone.
