Early life

Richard Kevin was born the third child of Richard Benjamin and Joanne Rhue Harrison. Rick’s older sister, Sherry, was born with Down’s Syndrome, suffering from serious health complications that led to her unfortunate death at the age of six. Rick’s brothers are Joseph and Chris.

Rick’s father served in the Navy for 20 years and his mother, a future real estate agent, was the daughter of one of the city’s most prominent lawyers. Rick’s family moved to California when he was two and his father was transferred there.

As a child, Rick became an avid reader of books. His favorite work was “The Great Brain” by John D. Fitzgerald, but he also became a fan of history books and his favorite subject was the Royal Navy, the British naval force.

He attended Taft Middle School although he never completed his education as he dropped out of school at age 14. In 1981, when Rick was just 16, his parents’ real estate business collapsed when they lost over a million dollars due to high interest rates. This prompted her family to move to Las Vegas, Nevada in search of new opportunities.

Career

First steps

After dropping out of school at age 14, Rick Harrison entered the workforce. He had many jobs such as repossessing cars and selling fake high fashion items.

Now based in Las Vegas, his father opened his first thrift store named Gold & Silver Coin Shop in 1981, giving Rick the opportunity to work with him during the day while having other jobs at night.

The store grew exponentially resulting in the company moving to another larger location on Fremont Street, although the experience was short-lived and the store had to be moved to a location of Las Vegas Boulevard due to various issues with their lease.

In 1988, Rick and his father thought about turning their store into a pawn shop. Back when Las Vegas had a population of 200,000 and according to Nevada laws business of that nature should be restricted until the population of the city increases stores we don’t want competition so they have passed a law that they would issue one more pledge license when there were 250,000 people in the city of Las Vegas.

That was when there were only 20,000 people in Las Vegas and no one ever thought it would hit 250,000. But lo and behold, in 1988, I was the first to get a license.

Obtaining the said license, however, was not an easy task; Harrisons struggled legally for some time until they were successful. The thrift store no longer existed as the gold and silver pawnbroker took its place.

By the late 1990s, the business had been hugely successful with an inventory of over 5,000 items, and by 2005 it was grossing around $3 million a year. The items the shop was most famous for were sporting goods and rare collectible jewelry.

Rick Harrison’s passion for history has also helped him improve the business, which brings him great pride: “We definitely have a different type of store. There are three generations working here. It’s really eclectic. Think about it: we’re American Chopper one week, Antiques Roadshow the next, Pimp My Ride the next. We are a bit of everything.

TV show

The first time the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop was shown on television was in 2003, when it was featured in “Insomniac with Dave Attell.” For this reason, Rick Harrison thought it would be a good idea to create a TV show surrounding the store’s operations. His efforts to turn this dream into reality were unsuccessful for a few years until 2008, when Leftfield Pictures producers with the same idea found the store.

The original idea was to bring the series to HBO, although the concept of the series was quite different from what Rick and his father had thought. It wasn’t until History Channel producer Nancy Dubuc changed the format of the show to a more real, peaceful setting with customers enjoying the items on display or selling their own at the store that the show finally had one direction.

“Pawn Stars” premiered in 2009, and in 2011 it was one of the network’s highest-rated series. To date, the show has been on the air for over 11 years and is in its 17e season.

The show has transformed the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop into a national attraction and draws tourists, television fans and history buffs to the store. For this reason, Rick, his father, his son Corey and his best friend “Chumlee” cannot be found in the off-season store.

Other television appearances

The best way to amuse myself was to read, so I became very interested in history books”.

On top of that, Rick expressed his joy at being reached out to the nonprofit, saying, “I’m honored to work with them and want to encourage everyone to talk about their stories and build a community for help out in any way we can as we move forward.” find more solutions for those who suffer from epilepsy”.

Private life

At 17, Rick and his girlfriend Kim were expecting their first child together. Unfortunately, pregnancy complications caused Kim to miscarry.

Despite this and their young age, Rick and Kim decided to get married, welcoming two sons named Corey and Adam together. After the birth of their second son, the couple divorced and Rick was responsible for raising the two children.

Shortly after the separation, Rick met a woman named Tracy Ann Hill, whom he married in 1987. The marriage lasted over two decades until they filed for divorce in 2011.

The following year, Harrison proposed to girlfriend Deanna Burditt, whom he eventually married in July 2013 in California.
