MCU Thunderbolts Theory: Zemo Is The Main Villain

The MCU has been in a weird place lately. Following the events of Avengers: Endgamethe Avengers as we knew them are all but gone, and Marvel is still working on introducing famous teams like the The Fantastic Four and x-men. This world needs protection, and the Thunderbolts may be the only ones capable of providing it. But why are the worst villains in the world suddenly trying to defend him?

Marvel Boss Kevin Feige also confirmed the MCU version of the team’s line-up at D23 2022: Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Red Guardian by David Harbour, Hannah John-Ghost, US Agent by Wyatt Russell by Kamen, Taskmaster by Olga Kurylenko, Black Widow by Florence Pugh, Yelena Belova and Bucky/Winter Soldier by Sebastian Stan.

The Thunderbolts team is not what we expected

In the comics, this team consisted of villains in disguise, led by Baron Zemo, who tried to outshine the heroes. However, the majority of them broke up with Zemo because they would rather be heroes than villains.

The Love at first sight the film, by contrast, features only one villain on the team, with the others being either anti-heroes or anti-villains. With no announced protagonist, it’s easy to imagine how a figure like Zemo could take over and transform The Love at first sight in a more comical and precise encounter. It might be more intriguing than that, however, if Zemo told a Civil War-style story in which team members split up to form their new teams.

Contessa, played by Julia Louis Dreyfus, has already appeared in several Phase 4 projects, recruiting characters such as Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova and Wyatt Russell’s John Walker to her mysterious cause. Contessa may have formed the Love at first sight in retaliation for the fall of the Avengers, which explains why she wants her own Black Widow and Captain America. However, given the character’s often misleading behavior in the comics, it’s hard to tell which side supports Contessa.

In short, the MCU Love at first sight appear to be a mix of several iterations of the team from the comics. Baron Zemo, as in the original incarnation, is likely to play an important role in this plot. As with the post-Civil War version, the team is most likely a government-sanctioned alternative to the Avengers rather than a gang of villains in disguise. The real question is how heroes like Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, and Thor will react to the arrival of this new team.

A civil war is needed to spice things up

The main antagonist of the film will be Zemo. If so, he can use his words to persuade some members to work for him under trickery that what he’s doing isn’t wrong if he’s protecting the world from greater threats.

The lineup showcased at Expo D23 could split as one side battles the other in a conscience struggle over what is good and what is heroic. While a Civil War might be a more dramatic way to split a team, there’s no doubt that such a split would come as a shock and certainly at the worst possible time. For example, suppose the team was in operation and its strongest players choose to switch sides when they need it most.

If so, tempers will likely boil over, resulting in a fight that detracts from the mission entirely, leaving characters like Yelena and Bucky to pick up the pieces of what’s left. Needless to say, whatever happens to The Love at first sight will almost certainly be far more dysfunctional and brutal than anything that happened to The Avengers.

The Love at first sight The film is set to hit theaters on July 26, 2024.
