Why didn’t Zack Snyder opt for John Williams’ score in Man of Steel?
Before Hans Zimmer, John Williams composed the most memorable theme for Superman in 1978. This score was used in each Superman film with various iterations except Superman 3. There is no doubt that the score was incredible. However, when Zack Snyder took over as director of Steel manhe was asked to use something new in the film.
A screenwriter from Steel manJay Oliva, clarified a rumor that Snyder wanted a new score for Steel man. One person shared an experience claiming that Snyder didn’t use John Williams’ score for Cavill’s Superman because he “hated Superman and everything he stands for.
Jay Oliva responded to this and explained why they opted for the new theme music for Steel man. She said she and Snyder liked the original theme. But Warner Bros did not allow them to use the music and asked them to opt for new music for Hans Zimmer’s film.
She says, “The studio wouldn’t let us use it because they wanted something new for this Superman. It turned out to be a good thing because Hans’ theme was perfect. After that, Zimmer came in and composed the score. Zack Snyder himself has stated that he avoided listening to Williams’ theme after Zimmer’s arrival.

Zack Snyder helped Hans Zimmer overcome his doubts
Zimmer explained how he ended up working on the film with Snyder. He said he tried to approach the new theme music regarding what had been done before. He also shared that he was hesitant to compose the score at first.
But Zack Snyder helped him overcome his doubts. He said that after listening to the plot of the film, he realized it was so different. He said, “I sat down with Zack and said, “Tell me the story,” which was so different and so much more about things I knew.
Considering how much Steel man was earlier Superman movies, John Williams’ music wouldn’t have been appropriate for Cavill’s Superman.
