‘Let’s be real, he hasn’t made a good movie in a while’: Internet asks Steven Spielberg to rest after announcing he won’t be retiring anytime soon

Steven Spielberg is one of Hollywood’s most recognizable and beloved directors. Throughout his illustrious career, he has worked on many classics like Jaws, Jurassic Park, Schindler’s List, ET and Saving Private Ryan. The director has been in the business for nearly 50 years, including his directorial debut, The Sugarland Expressin 1974.

As Spielberg nears his 76th birthday in December, fans are wondering if the director will start slowing down. Spielberg said he had no such intentions. Last week, Spielberg joined the Toronto International Film Festival to attend the premiere of his new film, The Fabelmans.

What does Steven Spielberg say about his career?

During an interview, Spielberg informed his fans that he doesn’t want to retire anytime soon and revealed the idea of The Fabelmans.

He stated:

“This [movie] it’s not because i’m going to retire and it’s my swimming song. Don’t believe any of this. [Co-writer] Tony [Kushner] and I started talking about this possibility when we were doing Lincoln together. Tony was sort of fulfilling the function of a therapist and I was patient, and we talked and I talked for a long time. Tony fed me and got me through it… But when COVID came we all had plenty of time. And we were all very scared. I don’t think anyone knew in March or April 2020 what was going to be the state of the art and the state of life even a year from now. And I think in that sense, I felt things were going from bad to worse that I just felt like [my adolescence] is the thing I really need to figure out and unpack.

The 75-year-old director explained the motivation behind the film, which is his first time addressing his own family history in a kind of cinematic biography that describes his exposure to the art form and his blossoming creativity. The Fablemans also delves into how infidelity broke his close-knit family, which includes three sisters, all of whom attended the premiere and sat alongside their famous brother.

Are the fans happy with his decision?

Well, the answer is no. While Spielberg has brushed up on his Hollywood presence with many classics, he seems to have lost his touch lately. Private Ryan was his most recent excellent film. It was ten years ago. He’s created a lot of great films since then, but nothing on the level of his previous work. Plus, he made some bad producer decisions (Transformers 2).

A Twitter user also said, “Michael Bay is a better director if I’m being honest. Spielberg is nothing but an overrated director right now.”

Fans want him to retire for good to avoid further embarrassment and backlash on social media. However, it’s up to Spielberg to decide when to stop making movies and relax in retirement.

The Fabelmans releases November 11, 2022.
