Johnny Depp has spent more time in court than on set in recent months as the actor has been embroiled in several legal disputes. Some have been downright hostile to his ex-wife Amber Heard, while others have simply included her. One of the latest lawsuits was brought against The Sun newspaper in the UK, which called Depp a “wife-beater” in its columns.
The argument centered on The Sun’s use of the phrase “woman-beater” to describe Depp in a 2018 article. The newspaper then called Depp’s ex-wife, Amber Heard, to testify. During their relationship, the actress accused the Pirates of the Caribbean perpetrator of abuse.

What was the verdict in the UK Libel case?
Despite successfully proving aspects of a defamation claim, Depp’s case against The Sun was ultimately dropped because the jury found the publication’s comments about the actor to be “substantially true” after hearing Heard’s testimony.
Needless to say, this was a significant victory not only for The Sun but for publishers in general, as it will negatively impact Depp as he pursues his other legal challenges.
“This request is rejected”, the court said in its decision. “The plaintiff was unsuccessful in his defamation action. Although he proved the necessary elements of his cause of action for defamation, the defendants demonstrated that what they published in the sense that I found the words to carry was substantially true.
“I have reached these conclusions after considering in detail the 14 incidents on which the defendants rely as well as the overall considerations which the plaintiff has argued that I should take into account. In these circumstances, Parliament declared that an accused had a full defence.
This unsuccessful verdict was to be at the center of Johnny Depp’s libel lawsuit against Amber Heard during his trial in Virginia. Depp has sued his ex-wife, claiming that an op-ed she wrote in the Washington Post in which she spoke about the abuse she suffered (without ever mentioning Depp’s name) cost her her job as Captain Jack. Sparrow in the lucrative Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.
