Early life

There is little information about Rick Petko’s parents or his early upbringing. His father, who worked painting bicycles, allowed young Rick to paint his first tank at age seven. Despite the mess of this Zundapp, Rick would find later in life that his career path would go in that direction.

His passion for motorcycles started early in life, and it’s no surprise that his favorite movies were also about motorcycles, especially if they were old. As a child, he owned various toy cars, mini-bikes, and go-karts that he broke in order to use his imagination to fix them.

This led to him buying his first welder as a teenager, which would help him practice his skills by fixing things and creating his own.

After graduating, he worked as a crane operator and cold saw operator in one of the service centers of the now defunct Bethlehem Steel, pioneers of steel fabrication in the United States: “I ran a huge cold saw, a band saw and I was a crane operator”. Ed (his friend) was running a multiple torch setup, so when I saw the parts he could cut I was hooked.

Although he quit his job in the steel company at some point, it was clear to him that he had found his true passion.

This led him to attend community college, where he spent over two years studying and gaining skills, earning a diploma in welding. However, Rick still considers many of his abilities to be self-taught.

Career

First steps

By the time Rick graduated from college, he was past the beginner stage and ready for new challenges. His welding skills eased the process of learning to build NASCAR chassis. His ability in this particular area led him to find employment at a driving school at Pocono Raceway, where he worked for five years alongside the Hooters Pro Cup racing team, now known as from The CARS Solid Rock Carriers Tour.

In search of new professional experiences, he became involved in the industrial field, working for more than ten years on the East Coast with manufacturing companies dedicated to the transformation of materials, heat treatment furnaces and relining furnaces. During this time he also worked in crematoria and in aluminum foundries.

Orange County Chopper

Returning to his early days, Rick began working on auto restorations, which eventually led him to Orange County Choppers (OOC), the iconic custom bike shop founded in New York City by Paul Teutul Sr. in 1999.

His skills were much needed by the OOC team when he joined in 2003, as his impressive ability and experience in steel creation and management was recognized.

In his time with OOC, his specialty was old school helicopters – his first project was the POW/MIA bike, which was created to pay homage to POWs (Prisoner of War) and MIAs (Missing in Action). This project was special for Rick, as his cousin fought in the Vietnam War and his name is on his memorial wall in Washington. In order to pay homage to him, his name has been affixed to the rear of the motorcycle.

Despite the recognition of his work at OOC, transportation made his journey difficult during the 13 years he worked at the workshop. On average, Rick Petko had to travel 90 minutes from his home in Pennsylvania to Newburgh, where the chopper shop is located.

American Chopper – Television debut

While working at Orange County Choppers, Rick also appeared on the reality television series “American Chopper”, which centered on the store and in particular its owner, Paul Teutul Sr. and his family.

Premiered in 2003 on the Discovery Channel, “American Chopper” became widely known on television as a pioneering reality show and aired for eight seasons until its cancellation in 2010. However, one aspect that would attract His viewers’ attention was Paul Sr. and his relationship with his son Paul Jr., which ended in a heated argument in a 2009 episode of the series, and a severe court battle in real life.

Rick Petko will also appear in the short-lived “American Chopper” spin-off “Senior vs. Junior.” However, Petko’s relaxed demeanor would contrast with the general tense working atmosphere of the shows, made worse by the bickering of father and son.

Rick left the shop in 2016, long after the TV series ended.

In an interview with Pocono Record, he revealed his thoughts on his time on the show, “It was great while it lasted, but it still wasn’t the core of who I was or what I was. I like to do”.

Harley Project

In 2016, Rick Petko formed a partnership with Pocono Mountain Harley Davidson to create bespoke motorcycles from the brand. At first, Petko was surprised that the store’s owners, Jim and Linda Schlier, immediately accepted his offer to become partners: “They were all in from the start. I was surprised. There aren’t many dealerships in the country that do a fabulous job right out of the store.

The main ambition of the agreement is to offer the brand’s local customers more than other stores: “It really has everything we need to make anything for anyone’s Harley.
