The film adaptation of Christopher Pike’s novel of the same name, “The Midnight Club”, is not based on an actual event but rather on the book of the same name (pseudonym of Kevin McFadden). In addition to this, the piece adapts several other works by Pike, such as “Witch”, “Gimme a Kiss”, “The Wicked Heart”, and “Road to Nowhere”. Pike came into contact with a young teenage girl who was in her last stage of life, and it was through this interaction that he received the concept for “The Midnight Club”. She was a follower of Pike’s work, and at her dying request her parents got in touch with the writer in the hope that he might see their daughter.
Pike was unable to see the girl in person as she resided on the opposite side of the nation from him; nevertheless, he was able to keep in touch with her through letters and phone calls. She explained to him that she and a few other patients at the hospital met in the evenings to talk about her novels. She said they did this every night. Pike came up with the idea for “The Midnight Club” as a way to pay tribute to him and his friends. but, rather than addressing his own memories, he found new ones to recount. Pike made the generous offer to give the young girl the initial manuscript of the book, but she insisted on waiting to read it until it was finished and published. Pike’s efforts ultimately failed and she did not survive the ordeal.
Mike Flanagan was truly blown away by the book when it was first published. Unlike the other horror books Flanagan was reading at the same time, this one was about young adults and dealt with serious topics like mortality, making it an engaging read for him. “I owe a lot of who I am now to the work he did. He wrote material that was considered quite advanced for his young readers, and it was not at all unusual for his teenage characters to die in a way that was considered quite shocking. His stories were full of things that I felt were extremely uplifting, adventurous and dark all at the same time. “As a result, I developed a little addiction,” he explained.
A few years later, when Flanagan began his career as a writer and director, he decided that “The Midnight Club” would be the first film he would make. He then sought financial support from his relatives and close friends in order to produce the film. Everything was ready for Flanagan’s first film on a limited budget. But when he suggested it to Pike’s editors, they immediately sent him a letter telling him to stop doing it. Although it was unpleasant for him, he moved on to other projects and established himself as a prominent figure in the horror genre with films such as “Gerald’s Game” and “The Haunting of Hill House”, among others. Despite this, he could not get rid of the idea for the film “The Midnight Club”.
“When I was a teenager, I thought I was going to get this luscious little novella for YA that would be about a creepy Grim Reaper or something. Instead, I got The Midnight Club, which was a particularly shocking experience for me. But in fact, the story was actually about young people coming to terms with terminal illnesses and their own mortality. And it didn’t hold back when it came to that aspect either. He described it as a “real lesson in how you could use gender to talk about extremely serious subjects”. “It was a great education,” he remarked. Luckily for him, this time Pike consented, and Flanagan not only got the chance to adapt “The Midnight Club”, but he also got access to other Pike stories that ended up being incorporated into the series. Flanagan’s good fortune enabled him to adapt “The Midnight Club”.
The writers of the Netflix series were adamant about sticking to the story’s core principles and preserving its essence while working on the project. According to Leah Fong, the stories told by children at Brightcliffe Hospice were about the possibility of leaving a legacy. “As authors, we all create; we try to leave something of ourselves in the world, and that is precisely what these children do with their stories. It is what allows us to go through everything that comes our way. “They make their own ghosts, something they can take with them when they die,” she explained. “having an agency in the last days of your life” was the driving force behind Flanagan’s decision.
