Dave McKinley: who is he?

The fact that mountaineering wasn’t Dave McKinley’s first career choice might surprise readers. In truth, the New Zealander had a keen interest in the culinary arts and, as well as having experience in the hospitality industry, he was also trained as a professional chef. According to sources, Dave was a highly certified and accomplished chef who eventually grew tired of his job and began looking for justifications for leading an active lifestyle outdoors. Dave finally managed to escape from the kitchen and realized he could make a living from his love of the outdoors. So, at the end of the 1990s, after obtaining the necessary diplomas, he began to work as a guide.

Dave began his career as a tour guide in and around Queensland where he quickly gained a reputation for his skill and knowledge. Although he knows the New Zealand mountain ranges, Dave chose to travel after he became better known. He began to travel outside his native country and became interested in the difficulties faced by mountaineers when conquering Mount Everest. Dave was inspired to pursue his aspirations by this fascination, and he quickly seized the opportunity.

Dave, by the way, was present in Nepal during the 2015 earthquakes and personally saw the devastation. Despite being in a dangerous situation and in a mountainous area, Dave managed to escape unscathed. Later he recalled that some people were not so lucky and that the majority of survivors lost a loved one or something valuable in the disaster. Dave went on to explain that it was an eye-opening experience and made him incredibly grateful for his life.

What happened to Dave McKinley?

Dave continues to make trips to a number of other countries including New Zealand, Australia, South America, Switzerland, France, Tibet and Alaska proving that the earthquake earth and devastation could not change his passion for mountaineering. Nevertheless, despite having completed several Everest summits, Dave has not climbed Everest since the disaster. Nonetheless, Dave’s career as an IFMGA guide appears to be flourishing, and he currently serves as a guide for many organizations.

Because Dave is married to a former guide, readers will be happy to hear that he also leads a fairly quiet personal life. The couple have created a great life together and are the proud parents of three wonderful children. The family lives in Twizel, New Zealand, with their three dogs. We are extremely inspired by Dave’s mountain guiding career and wish him nothing but the best for the years to come.
