Lane was raised by his father, Monte Kiffin, who today still works as a football coach and currently works for Lane as his player personnel analyst. Lane attended Bloomington Jefferson High School from which he enrolled in 1994, then enrolled at Fresno State University after being offered a football scholarship – he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1998.
He launched his coaching career when he became a graduate assistant at Colorado State University, staying there for a year before joining the Jacksonville Jaguars as a quality control assistant.
