Early life and education
Matthew was raised in Wyckoff by his father David Rutler who is an auto mechanic and his mother Kathleen who works as a secretary at a local business.
Matthew grew up with an interest in music, listening to bands such as AC/DC and Guns ‘n’ Roses before moving on to Kurt Cobain and Amy Winehouse. He attended Ramapo High School where he was physically active as he played several sports such as football and soccer but mainly focused on music and improving his guitar playing skills. After matriculating, he enrolled at Roger Williams University in Bristol, Rhode Island, and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 2007.
Musician career and other projects
Before graduating from college, Matthew formed the Nate Mott Band in 2006, with his friends Nate Mott who is lead vocalist and guitarist, Hoyt Hottel on drums and Evan Van Gorder who plays bass guitar.
The band started out performing in local clubs and bars before gaining a wider audience and being invited to perform at the Light Foundation charity event. They were part of the Rock the Ink concert at Dunkin Donuts Center and opened for Keith Kane in Boston, Massachusetts. Two of their most popular songs are “Vast Expanses” and “Say It”, and their debut album is “Like We Mean It”.

In 2010, Matthew met Christina Aguilera on the set of the movie “Burlesque”, when she was going through a divorce from her now ex-husband, Jordan Bratman.
