In 1994 Quinlan left Clanwilliam to join the Shannon U20s. In 1993 he led the Irish youth team in a game against Scotland. Before becoming a first-team staple, Quinlan, who started playing for Munster in 1996, captained the youth team. In a test match against Romania in October 1999, Quinlan made his senior debut for the Irish national team as a substitute. He played for Ireland ‘A’ between 1998 and 2001. In 2001 he faced in his first Six Nations match. He played for Ireland at the 2003 World Cup in Australia, where he scored two tries before dislocating his shoulder while scoring a crucial try against Argentina in the group stage, ending his appearance . Although he was included in Ireland’s roster for the World Cup in 2007, he did not play.
