Black Panther: Wakanda Forever – Why No Avengers Showed Up For T’Challa’s Funeral

Amid the chaos that had reigned since T’Challa’s death, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever ties together a story as gracefully as a pirouette in its dark and terribly painful ending. But before politics and war can begin, Ryan Coogler and his cast sneak and wade through the grieving town of Wakanda. As the eerily quiet grief juxtaposes the beating drums of the funeral, somewhere along the procession the MCU brings together all the broken hearts, littered emotions and molded trauma into a singular bubble and with each passing minute continues to heal. to tears no longer felt necessary.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Filter the Avengers

The MCU’s Phase Four closing statement and King T’Challa’s final chapter in the MCU were one and the same. The indescribable gravity of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever bounded and resonated through each of its characters, music, and honorable execution. The film devotes nearly its entire narrative to depicting Wakanda’s chaotic existence on the fringes of public and private. And so, Ryan Coogler stands firm on the one factor that could take away from the movie’s singularly pure moment that isn’t about Black Panther’s future, or impending war, or politics.

The tragedy emulated in Wakandan’s celebration of the life and legacy of their king and protector was also meant to mourn the loss and honor the memory of the actor who gave so much and was taken away too soon. It is logical that the funeral which took place on the sets of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever wouldn’t be turned into a gala affair defined by eye-catching cameos and transient appearances by members of the Avengers. In fact, the mournful melody accompanying T’Challa’s coffin to the end of the road lent more depth and gravity to the dark scene than an over-the-top gathering of A-listers could.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has always stayed the course in its (mostly) linear narrative with Kevin Feige mapping out the majority of the timeline and its consecutive events. An unwarranted gathering of the Avengers in a movie that isn’t exclusively about them would require rearrangement of contract terms, legal solicitation, and a massive budget to pay for each of the Avenger actor’s visits. Not only will that take the honesty out of what Coogler and all Black Panther: Wakanda Forever the actors were trying to portray, but would also turn the scene into an opportunity for a cheap cash grab for Marvel Studios.

Where were the Avengers when Wakanda mourned T’Challa?

The Avengers as we know them are all but gone. Whoever remains is neither welcome within the borders of the African nation nor seen as an ally of Wakanda. As repeatedly proven in the film’s constant battle to preserve itself, the outside world has set its sights on the vibranium-rich earth for its resources and the potential threat Wakanda would attract by inviting the Avengers to T’s funeral. Challa, not to mention when they are most vulnerable, is simply not quantifiable.

Also, logistically, of the Avengers – Tony Stark, Black Widow, and Vision – are dead in the mainstream timeline, and there’s been no word on Steve Rogers in the MCU since the events of End of Game. The rest of the team – Sam Wilson, Scott Lang, Bruce Banner, Clint Barton and James Rhodes – have never been particularly friendly with the monarch of Wakanda.

The Scarlet Witch aka Wanda Maximoff who spent a considerable amount of her time in Shuri’s company during the prelude to Infinity War has withdrawn from the face of civilization and she now remains under the influence of the Darkhold or can be presumed dead. Doctor Strange explores the multiverse while Peter Parker remains a forgotten hero. And it would be surprising if the Winter Soldier were invited back to the Wakandan borders after his betrayal during the events of The Falcon and the Winter Soldierespecially seeing how T’Challa helped him regain control of his mind despite the role he and Zemo played in T’Chaka’s death during Civil war.
