With an announced budget of $400 million, Avatar: The Way of Water could be the most expensive movie ever made

Avatar 2 is not only magnanimous with its runtime, but with the potential for success that this film carries, the studios were happy to spend an incredibly high budget on this one. In 2017, when 20e Century Fox controlled the next four Avatar sequels, Deadline reported that a total of $1 billion was being spent on the production of four films. Then, even in 2020, the same numbers were reported again. So this led to the presumption of Avatar: The Way of the Water with a production budget of $250 million. But apparently the newly reported numbers are much higher!

Avatar 2’s Budget

According to a recent report by The Hollywood Reporter, Avatar: The Way of the Water was produced for a huge budget which is between 350 and 400 million dollars. 2009 Avatar was produced for 237 million dollars and it was still reaping awards until this year (box office total – 2.922 billion dollars). So you’ll understand why studios would be willing to spend even more on sequels.

Disney’s acquisition of Fox likely provided Cameron and co with the additional cash infusion (beyond the original $250 million) that was needed in the production and post-production stages of Avatar 2. And such a high budget makes this movie join the list of the most expensive Disney movies to date. Avengers: Age of Ultronthe declared budget of amounts to 365 million dollars, Avengers: Infinity Warthe budget of is between 325 and 400 million dollars, and Avengers: EndgameThe budget is between 356 and 400 million dollars.

Then there is budget 2011 Pirates of the Caribbean: Fountain of Youth, which was $379 million. If you adjust that for inflation, then Pirates 4 would be the most expensive movie made to date. So, Avatar: The Way of the Water is in line with all those expensive Disney films.

From now on, Avatar: The Way of the WaterThe domestic box office opening projections are lower than Black Panther: Wakanda Forever$187 million opening. They vary between 150 and 175 million dollars. It’s not bad at all. The first one Avatar the film only opened with $77 million domestically. But he continued to earn money for several months. So you can expect Avatar 2The numbers will stay strong in the coming weeks if the movie is as good as James Cameron thinks. And that’s also a possibility as it faces little to no competition during the holiday period.

But the state of the theaters is no longer the same as for Avatar 1 because the movies don’t stay in theaters as long as the first. Second, the existence of Disney+ could also prohibit revenue later. So we shouldn’t expect Avatar 2 to produce numbers like Avengers: Endgame or the first Avatar film. For that, the movie would have to be really strong and the opening numbers should be between $250-350 million at the domestic box office itself. But, if the film is really good, then one would surely expect Avatar: The Way of the Water earn somewhere between $1.5 and $2 billion worldwide. It will also open in China, so the chances of success are higher. And that’s all Disney could ask for right now.

Avatar: The Way of the Water arrives on December 16.
