As much as I love fairytales and sharing their magic with my little girl, it is equally important to me that she have strong female role models to look up to – both real and fictitious. For every damsel in distress, there should be 10 damsels who can take care of business instead of waiting for the prince to show up.

This is a popular topic of discussion between Diana and myself as well, so this week’s theme is: bold female protagonists. As I’m writing this, I just thought of another character and I can’t believe I forgot about her while I was preparing my notes for our podcast. Scarlett O’Hara from the classic “Gone with the Wind” by Margaret Mitchell. She may have played the damsel card as a means to an end, but that Scarlett was anything but.

Here are our picks for this week’s topic:

Michele’s Picks: Diana’s Picks:
Hermione Granger, “Harry Potter” series by J.K. Rowling Claire Randall Fraser, “Outlander” series by Diana Gabaldon
Elphaba Thropp, “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West” by Gregory Maguire Marlene Dietrich, “Marlene: A Novel” by C. W. Gortner
Yelena, “Study” Series by Maria V. Snyder Mercy Thompson, “Mercy Thompson” series by Patricia Briggs
Katniss Everdeen, “The Hunger Games” trilogy by Suzanne Collins Veronica, “The Secret Daughter of the Tsar” & “The Tsarina’s Legacy” by Jennifer Laam
Diana Bishop, “All Souls” trilogy by Deborah Harkness
Karou, “Daughter of Smoke and Bone” series by Laini Taylor
Rosetta Wakefield, “I Shall Be Near to You” by Erin Lindsay McCabe

If you have other nominations you’d like to add to our list or if you want to join the discussion, reach out to us on Twitter (@MJLeivas and/or @Strahbary) or using the hashtag #winewomenwords or of course, you can always comment here!

We are continuing our Book of the Month (“The Portable Veblen” by Elizabeth McKenzie); this week’s chapters are 8 – 14.

Stay tuned for our next episode!
