According to the Disease Control and Prevention centers in the United States, 2 salmonella outbreaks
that seems to be linked to salami, as well as other Italian-styled meats, have infected at least 36
individuals in 17 different states.
The Consumption Of Salami And Prosciutto Has Been Related To Salmonella Infection In 17 States
A total of twelve individuals have been admitted to hospitals. There have been no recorded fatalities.
CDC officials believe that the actual number of sick individuals is
greater than the reported number since some people have recovered from salmonella without seeking
medical attention or being tested. They also believe that outbreaks may not be confined to the states
where infections have been recorded.
According to the Disease Control and Prevention centers, interviews with ill individuals suggest that Italian-style cold cuts such as prosciutto, salami, and other meats in cold or antipasto, prepared meat assortments are the most probable origins of both recorded outbreaks. Investigators are working to identify contaminated brands and products, as well as establish if the two incidents are connected to the same source, according to the Disease Control and Prevention centers. Children under the age of five, individuals over the age of 65, and those with weaker immune systems are all at greater risk of developing serious diseases. The Disease Control and Prevention centers advised individuals in those categories to cook all Italian-style meats until they reached an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit or until they were scorching hot before consuming.
Salmonella infection produces diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps in the majority of individuals between six hours and six days after consuming infected food, according to the CDC. Symptoms usually persist between four and seven days. According to the Disease Control and Prevention centers, the vast majority of individuals recover without therapy. However, some people may get sick to the point where they need to be hospitalized. Salmonella infection may travel from the intestines to the circulation and subsequently to other regions of the body, depending on the strain.
If you are experiencing severe symptoms, you should seek medical attention, according to the Disease Control and Prevention centers. If you have concerns regarding a specific state’s cases, you should contact that state’s health agency for information.
