According to a new study, these aneurysms seldom burst after being treated with clot-busting medicines, suggesting that the treatments are safe to use. The research was published in the online issue of Neurology on October 6, 2021.
According to research author JyriJuhaniVirta, MD, Ph.D., of the University of Helsinki in Finland, “These results are intriguing because they may extend the population who can get these thrombolytic treatments that can avoid mortality and disability for patients with strokes” Researchers examined the records of all patients who had a stroke and were treated with clot-busting medicines at a stroke center in Finland over a 15-year period for the study.
They investigated to see how many patients had a hemorrhagic stroke, or an intracranial hemorrhage, caused by the rupture of the aneurysm while they were in the hospital following the therapy after ascertaining how many had unruptured aneurysms.
One or more unruptured aneurysms were found in 132 of the 3,953 individuals in the study. There were 141 saccular aneurysms and 14 fusiform aneurysms among the 155 unruptured aneurysms. Only three patients, or 2.3 percent, had their aneurysms burst following therapy, resulting in a hemorrhagic stroke. Fusiform basilar artery aneurysms were seen in all three of them. Following their therapy, all three were given blood thinners. None of the aneurysms of the saccular type burst.
Fortunately, blood thinners are no longer frequently administered early after an ischemic stroke, which may lower the risk even further. According to research, the thrombolytic treatment appears to be reasonably safe for patients who have had an ischemic stroke, even if they have bigger saccular aneurysms that have not ruptured.
Blood thinners may increase the risk of aneurysm rupture in patients with big fusiform aneurysms. Therefore extra care should be given with therapy.”
