Long-COVID Symptoms May Be Caused By Exhaustion

According to a study published ahead of print in the Journal of Nuclear Medicine, long-term cognitive impairments following a COVID-19 diagnosis may be due to exhaustion rather than pathogenic alterations in the brain.

With every passing day, new research has been initiated by experts to understand the effectiveness of Covid on the body as it is a virus with unbelievable effects. The symptoms of long Covid can trouble one for a long time which can trouble different organs of the body in different ways.

Long-COVID Symptoms May Be Caused By Exhaustion

One more research has been conducted by the experts in this direction which has revealed that exhaustion can be caused due to symptoms of long Covid and one may have to face severe fatigue because of this. The study group has checked several samples with different medical conditions yet the same symptoms of long Covid.

Long-COVID patients had minimal or no objective deficits in cognition and brain disease, according to a review of neuropsychological tests and 18F-FDG PET imaging; nonetheless, many of them had subjective complaints such as extreme fatigue.

The phrase “long-COVID syndrome” is used to characterize symptoms that appear after a COVID-19 infection (typically more than 12 weeks after the infection), such as cognitive deficiencies like brain fog, memory loss, and focus issues, as well as fatigue and exhaustion. The fundamental reason for these symptoms has yet to be discovered.

Patients who require inpatient treatment for newly diagnosed COVID-19 have lower glucose metabolism in the brain, which is linked to poorer cognitive performance, according to previous research.

Researchers used neuropsychological tests and cerebral 18F-FDG PET imaging to see if individuals with extended COVID suffer from similar problems.

The current study comprised 31 patients who sought counseling for persistent neurocognitive problems. Patients underwent a battery of neuropsychological tests, with the findings examined to identify the severity of cognitive impairment.

The average group test results revealed no impairment. On a single-subject basis, mild deficiencies were seen in certain patients, primarily in visual memory.

18F-FDG PET imaging was advised to all of the 31 patients who got counseling, and 14 of them went ahead with it. No different abnormal findings or alternative diagnoses were discovered during the clinical examination of each patient’s scan. There were no significant changes between the scans and those of a control group.

The lack of substantial findings on 18F-FDG PET scans and only minor impairments on cognitive testing contrasts with the patients’ self-reported severe and long-term disability. Fatigue, on the other hand, was very common in the group, with 61 percent of trial participants reporting it.

In protracted COVID, fatigue is frequently associated with viral infections and inflammation and has been linked to immunological processes and chronic fatigue syndrome.

This shows that many long-COVID symptoms are caused by weariness rather than brain regional malfunction.
