Some of the changes that Diana brought to the royal family are still followed by her songs and their wives. Let’s go through some of the revolutionary changes that Princess Diana brought to the British Royal Family in the little time that she been a royal family member.
1.Wrote her own vows and refused to say “obey” in her vows
Princess Diana and Prince Charles got married in July 1981 and Diana wrote the vows of her wedding by herself. A notable thing about her wedding vows is that she refused to say “will obey” her new husband. Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle also followed the way of Diana and refused to say that they will obey their husband in their wedding vows.
2.Gave birth in a hospital
A very surprising and revolutionary change that Diana brought to the institution of the royal family is giving birth in a hospital. Princess Diana broke the tradition of giving birth in the palace and on 21 June 1982, she gave birth to her first, Prince William in St.Mary’s Hospital, London. Diana’s daughters-in-law, Kate and Meghan followed the practice that Diana started in the royal family and gave birth to their children in hospitals.
3.Diana sent her children to proper school
Princess Diana’s children, Prince William, and Prince Harry were the first monarchs to attend a public school. It was Diana’s insistence that her children should attend a proper school. Before Prince William and Prince Harry, the royal monarchs were did homeschooling with a governess inside the palace. The princes went to school with the commoners. Diana’s son Prince William and wife, Kate also chose proper schooling for their children and Prince George and Princess Charlotte are enrolled in private schools.
4.Traveling on the same plane
The future heirs of the royal family were prohibited from traveling together in a plane to ensure that no danger will be caused to the line of succession but Diana broke the rule by flying with both Prince William and Prince Harry. This happened in 1984 when she insisted that then 9 months Prince Harry should be permitted to travel together with his brother Prince William on their trip to Australia. The step is followed by Prince William and Kate Middleton.
5.Took her children to parks and public swimming pools
Princess Diana never hide her children from her public images or refused them any joy that needs to enjoy as kids. She took both her children to parks and public swimming pools just like every common mother will do for her children. She not only took her children to so many joyous places but also played with them at public pools and parks.
6.Broke the barrier
Princess Diana, the humble-hearted person she is, was always close with her staff and broke the barrier that existed between the staff and royal family members. She was very close with her driver and butlers. Princess Diana also encouraged her children to get close with the staff and her children were seen running in and out of royal kitchens. She also made her children become friends with the children of the royal staff and has asked them to help the royal staff in the kitchen if they want to.
7.Public display of affection to her kids
Princess Diana was never hesitant to show her affection and love to her children privately and publicly. Royal family members have always been very formal in displaying their affection to one another in public. The extent of affection shown was kissing and cuddling their children. But Diana was seen hugging and engulfing her children in public, forgetting about the formal manner that a royal member has to follow.
8.Always mingled with the public
Unlike other royal family members, Princess Diana always mingled with the public, sat close to them, held their hands, listened to their stories, and was always intimate with the public. When there was alot of stigma around HIV and AIDS, Princess Diana expressed her affection to the patients by holding their hands and hugging them. Diana was also seen playing with many kids and children when she visits them
9.Made bold fashion changes
Princess Diana not only brought changes to the personal and public rules of the royal family but she also made changes in the royal family fashion. The British royal family members were banned from following wearing certain clothes. Wearing an off-shoulder top or dress was not allowed but Princess Diana had worn many off-shoulder tight-fitting dresses to many events. It looks like Kate Middleton and Megha Markle also love wearing off-shoulder dresses like her mother-in-law and were seen wearing on many occasions. Princess Diana also wore low-cut dresses at many events.
10.Opened up about mental health issues
Diana also talked about many taboo subjects such as mental health issues. In her interview with Martin Bashir, she talked about her struggles with bulimia. Diana’s boldness to talk about her mental issues was also reflected upon her daughters-in-law and both Kate and Meghan have talked about their mental health publicly.
Prince Harry also talked about the mental struggles he had gone through after his mother died and he along with Prince William started the mental health awareness organization Heads Together.
