It was a smashing success, knocking off a Twilight film from the top of the box office, which was no easy feat. Additionally, it was the highest opening weekend of Sandra Bullock’s career as well as the most grossing sports drama of all time. Field of Dreams, of course.
Although widely acclaimed, The Blind Side was met with immediate backlash when it was released. A family’s support for their adopted child and an impoverished individual’s rise to prosperity drew some to the theatre, but the film was soon criticised for promoting racist stereotypes.
In the wake of Sandra Bullock’s heroic rescue of a timid, nearly-mute black man and the film’s numerous negative depictions of other people of colour, several articles have been written.
Michael Oher was outraged by his portrayal in the film, which he felt reduced his understanding of the game and made him appear ignorant, rather than having little or no educational opportunities.
