Top Boy director Brady Hood has been tapped as the director of the UK film The Clink, about young offenders who are offered to work in an expensive prison restaurant.

Based on a true charity, the film is a story about Tesco, an experienced young criminal who is about to begin his first stint in adult jail. In the hopes of a bright future as well as out of jail, hope is found at Tesco when he receives the opportunity to work in an exclusive prison restaurant serving people who pay.

The script is written by Helen Greaves (Walking the Dogs), and producing is John Giwa-Amu (The Machine) of Good Gate Media. Its Iron Lady producer, Damian Jones of DJ Films, and Alan Martin (Muscle) are involved as Executive Producers.

The $5-7M project was created with the help of financial institution Great Point Media, with which Giwa-Amu collaborated for Berlinale Winner The Party and interactive projects The Complex along with documentary The Count Me In that was recently bought through Embankment Films.

The team has been searching for areas within Wales, Yorkshire, and the Midlands. Producers are currently in talks with studios and sales representatives. Heather Basten is the casting director.

A rising Brit director Hood is currently acting as a director for Oscar recipient Olivia Colman in Steven Knight’s FX and BBC mini-series Great Expectations. Hood previously directed four episodes of the BAFTA-winning Netflix Crime-drama show Top Boy.

Giwa-Amu said: “Inspired by The Clink charity that consistently delivers amazing results in reducing reoffending rates across the UK. The film is an entertaining, frenzied, and heartbreaking story about an innocent young man who has lost all hope but who is saved by the power of love and food.”

Giwa Amu’s Good Gate Media has just completed the feature Ten Dates, The sequel to the interactive lockdown romantic comedy Five Dates, and the previous year made a documentary about drumming “Count Me in (featuring conversations featuring Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jane’s Addiction, Pink Floyd and Queen) It is available streaming on Netflix.

Hood is represented by Independent. Basten is represented through Curtis Brown.

Brady is a director who is enthusiastic about making commercially viable stories that have a social message. After serving as an assistant for directors like Joe Wright, Lone Scherfig along with Otto Bathurst, Brady was accepted into the MA Directing Fiction course at the NFTS.

In 2016, he graduated. His final short, “Sweet Maddie Stone,” was awarded numerous prizes, such as “Best UK Short” in the Critics’ Circle Film Awards, “Brief Grand Prix Award” at the Bristol Encounters Film Festival as well as the Audience Vote for ODEON’s “Best Short Films of the Year.”

The same year, he debuted season 5 of Endeavour for ITV and Mammoth Screen and was then featured as a “Screen the International “Star of Tomorrow. In the last few months, the director directed two seasons of Top Boy for Netflix and Cowboy Films, and, at the moment, he’s launching the second season of Top Boy for the platform.
