After Archie Battersbee’s family failed in their last attempt to keep him alive, a judge ruled he could turn off his life support.
Today at 2 p.m. Archie’s life support was due to be turned off, but at 11 a.m. his parents were given a last-minute virtual audition.
At an urgent Court of Appeal meeting this afternoon, where Sir Andrew McFarlane, chairman of the Family Division, reiterated that it was in Archie’s ‘best interests’ to stop the life support, the 12-year-old child of the family was informed of his fate.
The judges denied her parents’ request, but granted a brief reprieve or postponement until noon tomorrow. Its fan can then be turned off after that. The 12-year-old has been unconscious since April due to a severe brain injury.
Archie is being treated by medical professionals at the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel, east London. They have determined that he is brain dead and it is not in his best interest to prolong his survival.
