Avengers: Endgame Directors Anthony and Joe Russo have revealed that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige originally wanted to kill off all of the original heroes.
Avengers: Endgame was a film full of heartbreaking moments. Throughout the film, Black Widow sacrificed herself so Hawkeye could obtain the Soul Stone, and Iron Man sacrificed himself to wipe out Thanos and his army. Likewise, Captain America went back in time and chose to live out his days peacefully with Peggy Carter. The Ultimate left Hulk, Thor, and Hawkeye as the only surviving original Avengers. At some point, however, the body count must have been much higher.
During an interview on the Happy, sad, confused podcast, Anthony and Joe Russo discussed Avengers: Endgamebody count. During this conversation, Joe Russo revealed that at some point, studio head Kevin Feige floated the idea of killing off all of the original Avengers characters:
“Kevin actually kicked off at one point by removing all OGs from the board. We thought it was way too aggressive and audiences wouldn’t be able to process it, and actually picking one or two characters to make sacrifices throughout the movie might give you moments throughout of the movie where the action might stop and you might have emotional catharsis, then continue with the narrative, then add more emotional catharsis.
Anthony Russo then added that at this point they were just coming up with ideas and there wasn’t even a set script for the movie:
“It was also very early. It wasn’t like there was a script or anything that had that in it.
