VFX artists are said to be “depressed” over Marvel Studios’ Multiverse Saga slate.
Marvel Studios recently announced that Phases 4, 5 and 6 will consist of the second new saga for the MCU: The Multiverse Saga. Since there are many new projects coming in the next few years, some are curious how this will affect the production process, both during filming and, of course, during post-production.
However, for much of the visual effects industry, this is mixed news. Recently, VFX artists have been vocal against Marvel Studios for their treatment of VFX artists and companies for tight deadlines. Additionally, with the expanded slate on the way, many are disillusioned and fearful of further burnout from overwork, especially with all of the announced titles in The Multiverse Saga.
An anonymous VFX artist sat down with Defector to discuss the industry’s frustration with Marvel Studios’ The Multiverse Saga, and how it can affect artists’ morale when working on these projects:
“The whole industry seems a bit depressed following the announcement of Marvel’s Phases Five and Six, particularly with the insane amount of work it will be all on its own. They are no longer the attractive customer they were. A lot of burnout sets in.
VFX artists are among the most unsung heroes of blockbuster cinema. Especially in a time when multiple franchises release more than one movie/TV show per year, deadlines can be tight and work can be stressful. Along with the fact that VFX artists don’t have a union, this can lead to abuse from major studios. Hopefully working conditions can improve for VFX artists, because without them we wouldn’t have the visual spectacles we’ve become accustomed to over the years.
