Folie A Deux’ Being A Musical

Actress Zazie Beetz reacts to news that the upcoming Joker: Madness for two will be a musical.

Last week, it was officially confirmed by Warner Bros. Pictures that Joaquin Phoenix would reprise his role as Arthur Fleck in the sequel, Joker: Folie A Deux. The actor, who received an Oscar for his performance in the 2019 film, will also be joined by Lady Gaga, who is set to play Harley Quinn. The news certainly surprised people, and some really warmed up, including actress Zazie Beetz.

While promoting his new movie High-speed train, Zazie Beetz, who played Arthur Fleck’s neighbor Sophie in the original film, shared her thoughts on Joker: Madness for two being a musical in an interview with THR:

“(Laughs.) In fact, I think it makes wonderful sense. I wasn’t really surprised by that. Todd [Phillips] has always had a creative approach to the character. I love musicals, and I think of them because the characters feel and live so much that they can only sing and dance about it, whether in sadness or in joy. And I can also see it in myself, because singing and dancing is quite a cathartic experience for me. I was going through a really, really tough time at one point in my life, and I just started dancing and crying to myself. And it was an expression that matched where I was at the time. And so I can see Arthur, who feels and experiences so much, dancing and singing about it. It’s the Joker, so I think that makes sense to me.

Since the character of Zazie Beetz in Joker was left with an ambiguous fate, it’s possible she’ll return for a guest appearance in this sequel. However, since it seems to focus on a whole new dynamic, it wouldn’t be surprising if Sophie’s character wasn’t included. Either way, Beetz is certainly intrigued by the prospect of Joker: Madness for two.

Here is the official synopsis of Joker:

Director Todd Phillips’ “Joker” centers on the iconic nemesis and is an original, standalone fictional story never before seen on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck, who is indelibly played by Joaquin Phoenix, is that of a man struggling to find his way in Gotham’s fractured society. Clown for hire by day, he aspires to be a stand-up comedian by night…but finds the joke always seems to be on him. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty, Arthur makes a bad decision that causes a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty character study.

Directed by Todd Phillips from a script he co-wrote with Scott Silver, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais and Shea Whigham.

Joker is available in 4K UHD, Blu-ray, DVD and Digital, while Joker: Madness for two hits theaters on October 4, 2024. Stay tuned for all the latest news on Zazie Beetz’s sequel and future comic book roles, and subscribe to the Heroic Hollywood YouTube channel for more original video content!
