Despite Warner Bros. Discovery’s redesigns, Jurnee Smollett’s Black Canary solo movie is still in development for HBO Max.
In 2020, Jurnee Smollett made her DC Extended Universe debut as the Black Canary in Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of Harley Quinn). Although the film was well received by critics, it was not as profitable as Warner Bros. had hoped. However, just over a year later, it was revealed that Smollett had a solo movie in development for HBO Max that would center around his character. Recent developments, however, had some wondering if the movie would still happen.
Earlier this year, Warner Bros. was sold to Discover, Inc and a number of shake-ups occurred with the DC Extended Universe lineup. Most importantly, the company chose not to publish HBO Max’s bat girl, choosing instead to deduct the film’s expenses from his taxes instead of giving him a full release. This begs the question of what other movies might be on the chopping block, but apparently Jurnee Smollett’s Black Canary movie isn’t on that list.
According to TV Line, the film is still in active development at HBO Max. Currently, however, no further details regarding Jurnee Smollett’s Black Canary movie are available. The film does not currently have a release date.
Jurnee Smollett last appeared as Black Canary in Birds of prey. Here is the official synopsis for the DC movie:
“Have you ever heard the one about the cop, the songbird, the psychopath and the mafia princess? Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is a twisted story told by Harley herself, as only Harley can tell. When Gotham’s most narcissistic villain, Roman Sionis, and his zealous right-hand man, Zsasz, target a young girl named Cass, the city is turned in search of him. Harley, Huntress, Black Canary and Renee Montoya’s paths collide, and the unlikely foursome have no choice but to team up to defeat Roman.
Directed by Cathy Yan from a screenplay written by Bumblebee writer Christina Hodson, Birds of prey stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain, Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya, Chris Messina as Victor Zsasz, Ewan McGregor as Black Mask and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn.
Birds of prey is available on Digital HD, 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the upcoming film and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
