Autumn review: a heavy cast

Do you have vertigo? Do you wanna be? If that is the case, To fall is the movie for you. Released on August 12, 2022, To fall is a film that aims to capture his fear of heights in a unique way.

Fall Review - FandomWire
Virginia Gardner (left, “Hunter”) and Grace Caroline Currey (right, “Becky”) in TO FALL

The plot of To fall is interesting to say the least. It sees two girls Becky and Hunter embark on a journey, scaling the tallest standing structure in the country, a gigantic pole. The movie throughout is pretty straightforward as most of the plot is simply laid out for you throughout the various trailers and featurettes. Where this film really shines are its final moments. During the final act there is a twist which definitely changes the atmosphere and overall enjoyment of the movie, the only downside for me was that I felt the twist might have come off a bit too late.

The visuals shown in this movie are actually really good, as you would expect with a movie that was shot over a hundred feet in the air. The atmosphere of an isolated abandoned town in the south is so well portrayed and brings a bit more intensity to the story, as it is quite difficult to get help in a quiet town. Director Scott Mann made this story about as compelling as possible, and we really have to take our hats off to the twist at the end, because like I said, it’s a good story.

This movie also does a great job of portraying the potential benefits of social media in a dangerous situation, which is necessary because most of the time it’s portrayed as a negative. Hunter makes the climb to gain more subscribers and those followers certainly end up playing a part in the film, but not the one one would expect. The film also goes over some pretty interesting life hacks and safety tips that actually seem beneficial to hear while watching and not a burden on the story.

Fall Review - FandomWire
Grace Caroline Currey (left, “Becky”) and Virginia Gardner (right, “Hunter”) in the fall

I can’t stress this enough, but this film was really carried by its two main characters. Grace Caroline Currey plays Becky, a free climber who has just lost her boyfriend in a rock climbing accident. Virginia Gardner plays the phenomenal role of Hunter. Hunter is the more adventurous of the two and it is he who comes up with the idea of climbing the tower, which launches the film. Jeffrey Dean Morgan also accompanies them as Becky’s father, though to say his role was underwhelming would be a huge understatement. Couple that with poor acting and his role is one of the things that really weighs on this movie.

VERDICT

Fall is a film really held on the back by its cast, which is necessarily a bad thing. If you love thrillers or are a fan of handy actors I would definitely give this movie a watch, other than that I would suggest watching it when it is available to stream.
