Susan left behind her devoted husband of 52 years, John Whelchel, the former mayor of Boca Raton, Florida, and their four children. She also left behind her four children, Joanne Jackson and her husband Tracey, Jay and Melissa Whelchel, Matthew and Kimmie Whelchel, and Kristy Hartofilis and her husband Nick.
Besides 10 nieces and nephews, she also leaves her grandchildren Haley, Davis, Makayla, Mary, Jack, Maddie, Caroline, Vivi, Nick and Mira.
She was a devoted daughter, wife and grandmother. She was also an involved and persistent mother.

In 2011, Whelchel initially appeared to run unopposed, but just before the filing deadline, Linda Spurling Gruneisen declared her candidacy.
Whelchel won a second three-year term as mayor on March 8, 2011, beating Spurling Gruneisen by a nine-to-one margin. Whelchel received 3,903 votes (85.37%), while Spurling Gruneisen received 669 votes (14.63%).
Whelchel stepped down as mayor in March 2014 because his term was up and he was no longer eligible to run. She was followed by then-Deputy Mayor Susan Haynie.
