District 10 is real, and it’s happening. The world witnessed for the first time the fascinating premise of the sci-fi thriller District 9 back in 2009, and now, nearly 13 years later, fans of the cult classic received news on the sequel’s development from none other than actor Sharlto Copley. According to the actor’s claims, the sequel will soon be in production and a draft script for the sequel is already being worked on.

Sharlto Copley gives an important update
Yes, District 10 is in progress. Thanks to actor Sharlto Copley, whom we saw in District 9 as government agent Wikus Van De Merwe, the world got an update on the pre-production process for the upcoming sequel. In a podcast, the actor talked about the project and what it was like working on drafts for the script with director Neill Blomkamp.

Here’s what the actor had to say:
” We worked. I made a draft, sent it back to him [Neill Blomkamp]. He made a draft. It’s like just tiring to find the right kind of story. There were things going on socio-politically that he thought maybe in terms of timing he didn’t want to leave immediately. So maybe in a year, a year and a half [we will begin filming]. He wants to have something to say.
As the actor attests, there are certain elements of the draft on which the director wants to take his time. With the legacy of the first film, it’s only natural that the director would want to live up to it. Therefore, the film could see its production process roll out a year and a half after Blomkamp, Copley, and Terri Tatchell complete the script.

Despite a production budget of $30 million, when District 9 saw its release in 2009, it made $115.6 million in domestic box office receipts. The film was a huge success and was also well received by critics and moviegoers at the time. The film’s director, Neill Blomkamp, always considered a sequel to the first film. Shortly after the release of the film, the director had wanted to expand the universe of District 9 because it deals with a universe that the filmmaker has found”incredibly creative.

After years since District 9, there was initially no news about a confirmed sequel – something that was a natural expectation after the movie wrapped that begged for a sequel. Then, last year, the director had the following to say in an interview on District 10:
“It took a decade to figure it out, to find a reason to make this movie rather than just make a sequel. There was a subject in American history that the second I realized it fit in the world of District 9, that was an awesome way to make a sequel.
Therefore, the director plans to incorporate an element of American history that would best suit the world of District 10; an inspiration that struck him while watching a socio-political documentary. To reassure longtime fans, the filmmaker also confirmed in the same interview that the sequel “continues to be developed and it is getting very close.
Also this year, in May, the director spoke a lot about the upcoming episode when he sat down for an interview with Dexerto. “The replies that it is in the near future”, said Blomkamp when he mentioned that District 10 is being worked on.

As District 10 plans to go into production within a year and a half, District 9a found footage film that deals with concepts such as xenophobia and oppression in a sci-fi landscape involving aliens, can be streamed on Netflix.
