Fans fawn over Joe Keery proclaiming Charli XCX one of his idols

‘He’s so true for that’: Fans love Joe Keery proclaiming Charli XCX one of his idols

Steve Harrington, aka Joe Keery from Stranger Things, considers Charlie XCX one of his idols. In a recent interview, Keery opened up about his passion for directing and singing. When asked who his idols were, Keery chose two names. These featured Stanley Tucci and Charli XCX.

Charli XCX, 30, is known for her tracks Boom Clap, Break the Rules and Doing It. The singer has also written hits with other singers, such as Beg for It by Iggy Azalea and Same Old Love by Selena Gomez.

When Charli XCX found out she was Joe Keery’s idol, she tweeted the information and responded to the news by declaring, “Taste.”

Earlier this year, Charli XCX performed at a virtual concert to honor the return of Stranger Things. The virtual performance, billed as Live From The Upside Down, took place on June 23 and also featured Soft Cell, The Go-Gos and Corey Hart.

“How can you merge genres? What he accomplishes there, in a very beautiful way, is: how to merge a cookbook and a story about his life? No one has done it the same way, not that I’ve read.

Learn more about Joe Keery’s new album, Decide

Keery was guitarist and drummer for the Chicago-based garage and psych-rock band Post Animal. He was a member of the group for five years after going solo under the stage name Djo. In July 2019, Djo released his debut album named Twenty Twenty. Earlier this year in June, he unveiled his second album Decide. He also released a single from the album titled Change.

In an interview with NME, the singer said he was inspired by Kendrick Lamar. He said:

“I was trying not to edit myself on this record. On the last one, I had lyrics that I made more general or vague. [But on the new album], I’ve listened to Kendrick Lamar a lot, and what he does really well is focus on individual, personal lyrics. It makes them so much more powerful – and so I sought to accept that even though it showed a mean side of me.

He also shed some light on his attempts to disassociate himself from character while composing music:

“It’s not like I’m singing all these songs from a character’s perspective. It’s all me. It was just a way to separate myself from myself. I feel like that with the show I’m kind of a character, because of the internet I didn’t want this character to have an effect on people when they listen to the music – so releasing it with its own character is a way to give it its own place.
The record is due out next month and will be followed by a tour. Keery performed at the Lollapalooza festival earlier this year. He is also set to perform at Austin City Limits in October.
