She-Hulk: Lawyer creator Jessica Gao has revealed why Tim Roth’s Abomination appeared in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
Last year, fans were treated to a surprise when The Incredible Hulk villain, Abomination appeared in one of the trailers for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. In the film, the character made a brief appearance where he fought Wong in a cage match, seemingly for fun. After their fight, Wong opened a portal to bring Tim Roth’s character back into what appeared to be some sort of container. It turned out to be the same one in which we see the character She-Hulkthe trailers.
Why was he in Shang-Chi?
In 2020, it was revealed that Tim Roth and Mark Ruffalo would reprise their roles for She-Hulk: Lawyer. Speaking to Comic Book.com, series creator Jessica Gao revealed why Abomination appeared in Shang Chi. According to the writer, it was just to remind everyone that the character existed:
“So Abomination, Emil Blonsky was in my original pitch and at that point the last time we saw him was in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk. I no longer had any idea of their relationship with this character. I don’t know if they had any plans, but it was a story I wanted to tell, so I put it in. What’s the worst that can happen? I don’t get the job. Look, I haven’t gotten the job that many times at Marvel like it’s old hat to me. I was no longer afraid. I was like Daredevil. I was the fearless woman now.
Because he was built to be such a big part of the show in that original pitch and in the writer’s room, we really like, we were creating this whole story for him. Because everything in Marvel is connected, that’s actually why he was then put in Shang-Chi because he was on our show. That way it was kind of to sow it so people could get excited but also remember it and it kind of forced people to say, ‘Oh, I should go back and check it out and remember who he is and what it was all about.
