Jessica Gao, editor-in-chief of She-Hulk: Lawyerrevealed that she had already offered Marvel a Black Widow movie, which would still have featured Jennifer Walters.
Jessica Gao directed Marvel’s forensic comedy She-Hulk for Disney+. The series introduces Tatiana Maslany to the MCU as Jennifer Walters, the cousin of Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner, who refuses to let being turned into the hulk distract her from her legal career.
Now, Gao has revealed that she originally planned to introduce She-Hulk to the MCU in a very different way, having the character appear alongside Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow on the big screen.
In a recent interview with Slash Film, Jessica Gao revealed She-Hulk wasn’t the first project she’d pitched to Marvel, but it seems her previous pitches have led her to tell the story of Jennifer Walters.
“I was thrilled because it was a dream job, but also, I’d been rejected three times by Marvel on previous projects. So, I was like, ‘I guess the fourth time is the charm’ Gao said of his previous interactions with Marvel Studios.
The rick and morty The writer then revealed that one of his previous Marvel pitches was for a version of Black Widow which would have featured She-Hulk as a central character:
“The very first project I pitched to Marvel was for the Black Widow film. And I had She-Hulk in my pitch, but so much of She-Hulk in my pitch that someone actually commented, “It’s kind of like you pitching a She-Hulk movie with Black Widow in it.”
“Obviously there was a reason I didn’t get that job. I really believe there was a reason for all of this, because at the end of the day what I really wanted was She-Hulk and these other projects were not She-Hulk.”
Although he was not chosen to write Black WidowJessica Gao and her enthusiasm for She-Hulk obviously made quite an impression at Marvel, securing her the role of head writer for the character’s current Disney Plus series.
