‘Just Bored…It’s Just Stale’: Michael Mann, Director of The Heat – The Movie That Inspired The Dark Knight, Says Modern Action Movies Have Too Much ‘Outrageous Choreography’

Famous for directing action-packed films such as Public enemies and thieves, director-screenwriter Michael Mann is set to return directing the sequel to Heat. He is known to be very meticulous with films, taking multiple angles and shooting the same scene.

Additionally, the director is also known for doing a significant portion of his film’s photography, doing 60% in Heat (1995). He is also known to edit his theatrical releases for home videos by adding and removing scenes.

The director described his love for the cinematic experience in an interview with GamesRadar, stating that while he enjoys the TV format, he thinks it has a “short half-life”. Moreover, he said in the interview:

“I don’t let go of television. It really is [a golden age]. But the great cinematic experience – there is nothing like it. When we had a screening of Heat at the Academy, probably 80% of the audience had never seen it on the big screen, and the reaction was amazing. I had the whole cast there, and Chris Nolan moderated it.

Is action in modern cinema outrageous?

Since the advent of superhero movies and reboots, many veteran directors, including Martin Scorsese, have criticized new films for capitalizing on pure entertainment rather than better direction and writing, Michael Mann has the same to say for new action movies. He stated:

“I’m just annoyed by it. It’s not very interesting… I mean, sometimes the choreography is so extravagant that it’s fascinating, and that’s pretty good. But generally, no. It’s just expired.
