She-Hulk: Lawyer Star Tatiana Maslany has responded to criticism of Marvel’s decision not to make She-Hulk a more muscular hero like her cousin and fellow Hulk, Bruce Banner.
Tatiana Maslany makes her MCU debut in She-Hulk: Lawyer, with Jennifer Walters, the cousin of Bruce Banner of Mark Ruffalo. After a car accident results in Jen absorbing some of Bruce’s blood, she is transformed into She-Hulk.
The character’s design in the series remains close to the original appearance of his comic book counterpart. However, some fans feel that Marvel should have shown a more muscular She-Hulk, instead of opting for a more conventionally attractive look.
Star Tatiana Maslany has responded to criticism of She-Hulk’s CGI design, expressing her understanding of fans’ desire to see a different female physique depicted, defined by the character’s strength rather than being suited to conventional beauty standards.
While Jennifer Walters grows taller when she transforms into She-Hulk and becomes noticeably more muscular than in human form, her physique remains quite lean and nowhere near as muscular as Bruce Banner’s Hulk, suggesting a bit of a character double standard. . pattern.
Speaking about the criticisms that have emerged, Tatiana Maslany told AP Entertainment:
“There’s been some criticism that her body isn’t muscular, and for me, I think that’s also an interesting conversation to have. There’s an opportunity here for a very muscular woman, which the you don’t often see on screen, and I feel people in that desire, I feel it. A lot of it is about perceiving the outside, and a lot of it is about how people look at her differently depending on what body she’s presenting at the time. Jen Walters is received very differently from She-Hulk, and that response and outward comments tell her something about herself.
In the comics, She-Hulk has grown bulkier and more Hulk-like in recent years. Perhaps the MCU will follow this path and see Tatiana Maslany’s She-Hulk evolve in future appearances. It would be encouraging to see the character used to challenge traditionally reductive portrayals of female body types.
