Cobra Kai creators working on Ferris Bueller spin-off

As Variety reported earlier today, Paramount Pictures is set to bring another long-dead film back to the forefront of public attention in Ferris Bueller’s day off. Directed by John Hughes, the original followed Bueller and his best friend Cameron as they decided enough was enough and wanted a day off from high school, and instead got themselves into all sorts of trouble and of hi jinks.

Do we need another spin-off?

Tentatively titled “Sam and Victor’s Day Off”, the film is a spin-off focusing on two previously unnamed valets in the original film. They took Cameron’s red Ferrari for a ride, and since the story is set to take place on the same day as the original movie, it’s a safe bet we’ll see more of it.

It’s worth saying at this point that the film is thirty-six years old and both characters were played by Richard Edson and the late Larry Jenkins. For obvious reasons an overhaul will be needed for the spin-off, but do we really need one? I don’t hear anyone crying out for an expansion into the Bueller universe, which isn’t to say it won’t be good, but it’s not exactly warranted.

Cobra Kai producers on board

Some positive news regarding this development is the talent that is on board so far, with John Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg and Josh Heald all attached. These three were the driving force behind the truly fantastic Cobra Kai show, which in itself, was presented as an unnecessary expansion of the Karate Kid film series, but has long since proven to be an incredible standalone project, as well as a faithful complement to the films that came before it. Bill Posley, a writer from the same show Cobra Kai, is attached to write the Ferris Bueller spin-off. So it’s fair to say that there will be plenty of people with experience in bringing 80s classics back to the big screen.

Fans of the original aren’t on board

It’s easy to see why fans of the original are less than impressed, with Twitter users expressing their frustration and annoyance at the prospect of smearing another lovingly thought-out film from our youth.

While we can say the subjects of the Ferris Bueller spin-off are a bit of a headache in their choices, we’ll reserve judgment until we see it. At this point, it’s still early in pre-production, with no script, director, or actors attached. Hope it’s more Cobra Kai level of quality and minus just about any other quality derived from a long dead film.
