Born Jeffrey John Hornacek on May 3, 1963, in Elmhurst, Illinois USA, he is a former professional NBA player and later coach. He went to Lyons Township High School in La Grange, Cook County, Illinois and after graduation enrolled at Iowa State where he spent four years playing basketball for the varsity team.
He was one of the best players in his class and his No. 14 jersey was later retired by Iowa State Cyclones.

He played for the Suns until 1992, when he was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers, while the Suns acquired Charles Barkley, and the 76ers also acquired Tim Perry and Andrew Lang.
