The Mother of Dragons has rekindled the blood and fire of Westeros. Nevertheless, for a long time, that was all the Seven Kingdoms had. Once upon a time, his family ruled the Land with the strength of a living flame. Dragon House will take you back to when House Targaryen was at the height of its dominance.
However, when exactly did this happen? Who else in prominent households participated in this bloody civil war? This is where the events of the spin-off series occur relative to the main Game of Thrones timeline.
House of the Dragon Timeline
Given that the showrunners revealed that the miniseries will take place centuries before the events of the first Game of Thrones, the likelihood of seeing familiar faces like Arya Stark or Cersei in a special appearance is, to say the least, low. Due to the changes made to adapting George RR Martin’s novels for television, it will be difficult to determine when the show takes the premise in the timeline, which goes from before to after Aegon’s triumph and uses the BC and AC notation.
The events of game of thrones would have taken place around 298 AC, so it is possible that this mini-series takes place around 100 AC. However, neither Martin nor the showrunners have verified this.
How House of the Dragon Connects to Game of Thrones
The central theme of Dragon House would take place over a considerably shorter period, however, the show will span a much longer duration. In 103 AC, the Old King, Jaeherys I, sets the ball rolling. There was no clear line of succession after the longest-reigning Targaryen monarch. A Grand Council had already declared his grandson Viserys successor to the crown before his death, and thus Viserys became king.
Upon his demise, Viserys hoped to dodge any inquiries about who might succeed him as king. Thus, in AD 105, King Aegon IV swore all the lords of Westeros to recognize his child Rhaenyra as Princess of Dragonstone as well as her successor. After the tragic loss of his wife, while she was working, Viserys made her his first choice. Rhaenrya was going to be the first female ruler of Westeros since he had no living sons.
Unfortunately, this was not without debate. Viserys favored her over her brother Daemon, the obvious rightful heir. However, it wasn’t until a year later that things really started to go wrong. With Alicent Hightower, Viserys had a son named Aegon. Although his older half-sister was the more deserving successor, Queen Alicent had her eye on the Iron Throne for her son.
Despite the king’s best attempts to restore the truce and his desire that Rhaenrya continue to rule his kingdom, tensions between Rhaenyra and Alicent’s followers and these grew throughout Viserys’ reign. After the death of King Viserys in AD 129, a long-simmering conflict that had already seen considerable bloodshed escalated into a full-scale civil war.
The Dance of the Dragons was a devastating two-year event that finally ended in 131 AC. This places the series timeline approximately two centuries before the events of Game of Thrones.
