Tons of die-hard LOTR fans are gearing up for the launch of “Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” as they want to explore the new perspectives the series can bring to Middle-earth. In an impressive twist, this will be the first adaptation entirely focused on the events of the Second Age. Tolkien’s rings will play a major role in Amazon’s new miniseries, just as they did in the classic “LOTR” blockbusters.
And if you’re talking about the rings, how can you ignore the legendary craftsman who forged the 19 Rings of Power? Celebrimbor forged the “rings of power“and ushered in a period of great prosperity in Middle-earth, coupled with strife and death.
Let’s dig in and uncover all the secrets surrounding this legendary craftsman.
The origin of Calebrimbor
He was the only surviving grandson of Fanor and heir to Curufin, the sixth son of Nerdanel and Feanor. Strangely, the Middle-earth epic does not reveal how or when Celebrimbor was conceived; all that is known of him is that he was an elf who once resided in the realm of Eregion during the Second Age. As such, he played a vital role in establishing the brotherhood of gemstone smiths.
For the record, the legendary craftsman participated in the battles of the first age of Dagor-nuin-Giliath as well as Dagor Aglareb. After the conflict, he too chose to remain in Middle-earth after surviving the fall of Gondolin. It was during the Second Age that he first interacted and befriended the brave Dwarves of Khazad-dum. Things began to change, unfortunately, when an outsider entered the kingdom and began interacting with the master smiths.
He introduced himself as Annatar, saying he had come here to teach the locals how to make rings. However, no one suspected that Annatar was really Sauron masking his identity. Celebrimbor didn’t take a liking to Annatar at first, so he ignored her advice. However, his other smiths were so impressed with him that they began producing rings in the style specified by Annatar.
The tragic end of Celebrimbor
To make matters worse, Celebrimbor fell prey to deception and began crafting the Three Elvish Rings independently of Sauron. However, he didn’t realize that Sauron had put a binding enchantment in the rings as part of his artistry.
In honor of the three main elements of Middle-earth – air, fire and water – Celebrimbor gave them the names Vilya, Narya and Nenya. The rings were scattered to various places under his direction. Sauron secretly fashioned the One Ring, the supreme ring that would command all other rings, to dominate Middle-earth.
In retaliation, Sauron launched an invasion of Eregion and razed the entire kingdom. During the confusion, Celebrimbor was caught and tortured to reveal where the smaller rings were, but he never said where he shipped three of the finest rings he created (Vilya, Narya, and Nenya). In the end, Celebrimbor succumbed to his torture and his corpse was riddled with bolts and hung from a post.
Charles Edwards will take on the role of Calebrimbor in the upcoming Amazon Prime series Lord of The Rings: Rings of Power.
